Summary
For the renewal of the Toyota Yaris, a new in-line 3-cylinder 1.5 L gasoline naturally
aspirated engine has been developed as part of the TNGA engine family. Following the earlier introduction of the in-line 4-cylinder & V6 engines, this is the latest addition to the engine line-up.
To achieve the dynamic and responsive feeling from low speeds, the TNGA concept implemented on the new in-line 3-cylinder engine combines a higher specific power with lower fuel consumption while meeting exhaust gas emission regulation. The specifications and structure of this engine are optimized based on the TNGA’s high speed combustion concept. This new engine has 2 variations, for conventional vehicle and hybrid electric vehicle, able to achieve each vehicle’s unique characteristic.
The introduction of several key technologies, including D-4 injection system (on the conventional variant) resulted in a specific power of 61 kW/L and maximum thermal efficiency of 40 %.
The conventional prototype vehicle equipped with this engine combined with the new Direct shift-CVT transmission achieves 5 % better acceleration performance for 0-100 kph and 6.3 % fuel consumption improvement for WLTC compared to the current model. In hybrid powertrain configuration, the prototype vehicle equipped with this engine and Toyota’s new generation hybrid system achieves 15 % better acceleration performance for 0-100 kph and over 20 % fuel consumption improvement for WLTC compared to the current model.
