Summary

Magna has a long tradition of passenger car and commercial vehicle development, and hydrogen fuel cells currently gain importance for locally emission free electric mobility. Especially for long-haul heavy trucks. Having successfully completed several related projects over the last years, we want to summarize our findings regarding advantages and challenges of such systems.

Especially in the field of thermal management there are clear differences between fuel cell- and both combustion engine- and battery electric vehicles. Related system requirements lead to a large number of auxiliary components for compression, cooling and humidification of the used working media. In this paper challenges during the development of cooling system for FC powered vehicles are shown and possible solutions are presented.
