Summary
The following paper introduces essentials to become a competitive battery cell supplier in an established and rising global market for battery cells for automotive applications. Five dimensions are highlighted throughout presentation and paper: scales, technology, speed, focus and people. These necessities, as we describe them, are thereafter discussed with examples on how Volkswagen Group with its in 2022 established battery company PowerCo approaches them. As the global market for battery cells rises so does the demand for Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen Groups demand for battery cells and systems will be more than 450 GWh in 2030. To foster complete economies of scale – Volkswagen introduced a rock solid strategy for the electrification of its portfolio. A fundamental differentiator of this strategy is the unified cell concept. Volkswagen Group will maximize utilization of the unified cell to up to 80 % of its BEV volume. PowerCo is Volkswagen Groups strategic asset to develop, test and produce the unified cell and to max out the technological potential of this special prismatic cell design. Roughly 50 % of the Volkswagen Group demand will be delivered by PowerCo in 2030.
