Summary
The roll-out of the first generation of a general modular-design engine family from the BMW Group (gasoline, diesel and 3-, 4- and 6-cylinder) which started in 2013 was completed with the launch of the BMW TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder top-end Diesel engine in the BMW 750d xDrive in mid-2016. A large number of innovations made in this technology demonstrator are now being introduced into the second generation of the modular diesel family. The rollout of the technical revision will start at the end of 2017 with 3- and 4-cylinder engines for transverse applications. The objective of the further development was to retain the modular principle while further reducing, fuel consumption and weight yet improving dynamics and engine acoustics. Furthermore, the second generation forms the basis for reliably fulfilling future emissions and legal requirements.
