Summary
Volkswagen is systemically driving forward the development of electric mobility. In order to allow it to offer the widest possible range of vehicles and respond flexibly to technological progress, the Group was the first automotive manufacturer in the world to introduce a modular electric drive matrix – the MEB. By 2028, it is planned that up to 15 million electric cars should be based on this platform and that all-electric vehicles should account for 70 percent of sales in Europe by 2030. The heart of the MEB is its battery system. Volkswagen is continuously optimising the energy storage unit for powering its electric vehicles. These enhancements are related not just to the design of the cells and their cell chemistry, but also take into account the overall system with thermal and battery management and additionally include the charging infrastructure and the charging points. Customers benefit from the associated improved functionalities of the electric vehicles through increased comfort. The goals of continuous battery development are easier charging planning, shorter charging times, increased ranges and a longer service life.
