Summary

Future electrified vehicles will be increasingly defined by software. The integration between systems and the vehicle will be far higher than it used to be in conventional architectures. The conventional approach to in-vehicle electrical/electronic (E/E) architecture has many limitations and is no longer sustainable. Today’s highly distributed E/E architectures will evolve towards zonal and centralized architectures with far fewer hardware components but new functional opportunities. The Magna hardware-agnostic software platform allows for integrating cross-domain vehicle functions (applications) within a higher-level computing unit. Just one example is the integrated e-drive and brake control functionality. This paper first describes the boundary conditions and future E/E architectures as seen by Magna. Secondly, it presents the specific functions for Energy & Motion Control as well as the interaction with other vehicle systems like the thermal system. Moreover, it shows the benefits of this more integrated and centralized control approach in terms of efficiency, safety, dynamics, and convenience.
