Summary
The roll-out of the new six-cylinder diesel engine family began in 2015 with the introduction of the new BMW 7 Series. In addition to the 30d position a 40d and a 50d position will also be offered. A new addition to the portfolio of this engine generation is an M-Performance model, the M40d. The objectives for the development of the new drive train were the power and dynamics typical of the M series and qualification for the latest EU emissions legislation. The technology used to achieve the demanding overall objectives is described in this work and the functional results in terms of driving performance, consumption and emissions are shown.
