Summary

Already during definition of specifications for new engines the course for success of gasoline power train concepts is set. Economic considerations recommend a high degree of modularity that meets the requirements for all target markets. Legal boundary conditions in terms of emissions and fuel consumption are mandatory to be fulfilled. Furthermore, an attractive drive train must meet consumer expectations regarding high fuel efficiency even in real-world driving profiles, drive performance, comfort, reliability and price. Additional market demands are due to the increasing diversification of fuels e.g. by various qualities of conventional fuels or different ethanol blends.
