Summary

The spray-guided BMW DI combustion process allows to a high degree to realize the potentials of the new material values and of a modified process control involved in a lean, stratified combustion. The performance potential clearly exceeds 60 kW/dm³ and the consumption has been reduced by over 20% compared to a conventional S.I. engine, offering significant advantages to the customer. The DI combustion process also creates a new basic technology in the field of S.I. engines, allowing to tap new potentials in this area. The DI technology, in combination with innovative turbocharging technology and Double-VANOS redefines the power output and fuel consumption of S.I. engines whilst maintaining the virtues of an S.I. engine like wide rpm range and high spontaneity. This article decribes the concept examinations on the BMW DI combustion process and the concept analyses of a combination of this combustion process with innovative turbocharging technologies.
