Summary

The typical advantages of the modern diesel engine – high torque at low engine speeds and high efficiency – come into play in particular on long journeys and with heavier loads. This means that the preferred engine for the light commercial vehicles segment is here to stay for the foreseeable future. With the introduction of the new engine generation of the EA288 in the Volkswagen Multivan, Transporter, and Crafter, the vehicles reliably fall below the limits of the applicable European emission standards. To meet these requirements, the development of the engines included a close-coupled exhaust emission control system in combination with a new underbody exhaust system. The introduction of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) twin dosing system for light commercial vehicles is an essential element for reducing nitrogen oxides (NO_x). In addition to the cooled high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, a cooled low-pressure EGR, a de-throttled charge air system and, on the biturbo engine, a fuel injection system with a maximum injection pressure of 2 500 bar are also used. With the newly developed technology elements, the engine offers significant fuel savings compared to the predecessor model. Furthermore, the engine is approved for use with current commercially available fuels produced from renewable resources. The engine thus makes an important contribution along the road toward CO₂-neutral mobility in the light commercial vehicles segment.
