Summary

The shipping industry is under increasing pressure to drastically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to meet net-zero targets. Transitioning to alternative fuels like green methanol and ammonia requires significant changes to the engine, particularly the injection system, due to their lower energy density, toxicity, and chemical aggressiveness towards metals. Achieving high substitution rates and maximum engine efficiency is only possible with innovative injection systems. The most efficient solution is a diesel-like diffusive combustion process, requiring high-pressure direct injection of methanol or ammonia with pilot diesel injection, while maintaining full-load diesel capability due to limited Power-to-X fuels availability in ports globally.
