Summary

Development efforts for current and future combustion engines, have a significant increase depending on different boundary conditions, which have to be met. Specially premium class products require highest quality standards and great performance. Due to available capacities and expense situations, it is getting harder for developers of such low volume niche applications to be competitive with high volume types in the company internal competition. The following presentation points out specific technologies that were applied to MAN’s new Vengine generation, which drives the Top-of-the-Range civil commercial vehicles on EURO 5 emission standard. Among other things, the main focus is drawn to the 2nd generation of the Common-Rail injection system, the steel pistons with a suitable shape of the piston recess, which is used by MAN for the first time, and the exhaust aftertreatment by means of the SCR-technology.
