Summary

Scania plays a key role in Traton’s strategy to become a global champion of the truck and transportation services in a market with increasing requirements for fuel efficiency and more stringent emission legislations. These requirements can only be met with state-of-the-art engine technology and high performance aftertreatment combined as one fully integrated system. Scania has designed a novel aftertreatment concept which has been tested in close cooperation with Umicore. The engine is generating high NOx raw emissions while providing lower exhaust gas temperatures and as such enabling increased fuel efficiency. The higher NOx is reduced via an innovative catalytic emission control system where an upstream SCR catalyst with independent urea dosing works in synergy with a classical downstream SCR system. This Twin-SCR configuration delivers increased emission performance (NOx/NH3/N2O/PM) to cover a large span of real driving emissions. In addition, the system maintains the successful strategy with NO2-driven soot oxidation of the particulate filter and thereby avoiding active regenerations with high temperature exposure to the catalytic system as well as saving fuel. As a vital part of a complete powertrain it enables a system with very low GHG emissions (CO2, N2O). Such an aftertreatment system requires durable and highly efficient aftertreatment. Emission robustness includes excellent performance over the vehicle’s lifespan as well as consistent and predictable catalytic activity. Scania has built on its decades long experience with Vanadium-based aftertreatment systems to develop, in close partnership with Umicore, the next generation Vanadium SCR catalysts (V-SCR). These state-of-the-art V-SCR catalysts are able to meet the performance and durability targets required by current and expected future emissions legislations as well as complying with relevant regulations globally, thus making the newly developed engine and exhaust treatment system a truly global platform to support Traton’s strategy.
