Summary
Continuous reduction of transportation-related greenhouse gas output and simultaneously mitigating pollutant emissions from the exhaust of on-road vehicles represent major tasks for the entire automotive industry globally. Further tightened norms and extended boundaries of emission standards regarding tailpipe emissions and vehicle fleet fuel efficiency demand continuous development of new powertrain generations and application methods. In order to further optimize the operating regimes with good fuel efficiency, also the avoidance of poor efficiency areas dictate the engineering strategy. In this context, the assistance of electrical propulsion on board of the vehicle in a combined propulsion system approach gains increasing interest.
