Summary

With the Green Deal, Europe wanted to set a benchmark for the whole world to follow the path to a green, CO₂-neutral future. Today, however, it is clear that crucial, but very idealistically assumed, boundary conditions have not materialized and will not occur in the foreseeable future. The balance between the CO₂ reduction in electricity generation and the proportion of battery-electric vehicles, which is crucial for an efficient reduction of transportrelated CO₂ emissions, is increasingly getting out of hand. This results in a clear shift in CO₂ emissions from the transport sector towards the energy and industry sectors, but overall, there is hardly any short-term reduction in climate-relevant CO₂ emissions.
Extensive calculations based on “Lifecycle CO₂” show that Japan, for example, will achieve comparable reductions in climate-relevant CO₂ emissions to Europe with a “Well to Wheel” legislation within a balanced technological change - but with significantly lower investments in infrastructure, vehicle fleet and production changes.
It is extremely interesting to put these future perspectives in the context of the content that we have shown and discussed in the past at the Vienna Motor Symposium.
