Summary
Spark-ignition engines running on e-gas (renewable CNG) represent a major element of the powertrain portfolio for sustainable, CO2-neutral mobility. Vehicles powered by gaseous fuel can thus be seen as the ideal complement to electric mobility. In close collaboration with suppliers as well as network and fuel-station operators, Volkswagen launched an offensive in 2017 with the aim of expanding the existing network in Germany to 2,000 fuel stations and bringing one million CNG-powered vehicles to Germany’s roads by 2025.
A broad range of CNG vehicles is crucial for the successful implementation of this offensive, and is the only way to meet the diverse demands of our customers. A decisive aspect of this is an attractive powertrain portfolio. Volkswagen is now presenting the new 1.5 EA211 TGI evo, which, through the technical genes of the 1.5l EA211 TSI evo, is ideally prepared for bivalent operation with liquid and gaseous fuel. Besides a high compression ratio, another significant factor is the efficient Miller combustion cycle in combination with turbocharging featuring variable turbine geometry.
