Summary
While the world population sees exponential growth, an increasing share of the population lives in urban areas. Technology allows implementing "smart city" strategies, to improve living conditions for people and create an environment for sustainable economic growth as a prerequisite to progress these further. Mobility is an important aspect of a smart city strategy - to reduce traffic or at least its negative effects when it comes to pollution, traffic jams and safety. While the general objective of cities policies is similar, significant differences exist how cities try to achieve these objectives through a mixture of regulations, infrastructure development and R&D support. Successful future mobility strategies must reflect these differences and require an appropriate organization.
