Summary
The choice of the mounting of a piezoelectric sensor in large bore engines is together with the sensor specifications of paramount importance for attaining an optimal signal quality as well as a high degree of operating reliability. In this treatise the crucial geometric points of interest and their effects on the acoustic signal quality as well as on the sensor reliability are being discussed. Often high temperature levels are the main reason for causing sensor failures. The possibilities to take influence on the signal quality and to determine real temperatures are presented. If a high level of accuracy in terms of temperatures is required, the best way to achieve this is to measure them on the real engine. Some basic rules for an optimal installation are included.
