Summary

In 2013 General Motors launched the first of a new generation of diesel engines: the efficient and powerful 1.6 liter four-cylinder Euro 6 Midsize Diesel Engine. This was the initial step of the strongest powertrain offensive of the Opel/Vauxhall brand in Europe: from 2013 to 2018, seventeen new engines have been and will be launched to the market, focusing on high performance and refinement, in combination with low fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. In 2016, an additional variant of the Midsize Diesel Engine family will be introduced in the Opel Astra as “Top of the Line”: a high power unit with two-stage turbocharging. This engine develops 118 kW of power output and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. The core of the engine is the extremely compact two-stage turbocharger, which allows the integration of a fully close-coupled aftertreatment system in a C-segment vehicle. The key technical features of the base engine and turbocharging technology are described in this paper.
