Summary

The use of sustainable fuels or sustainable energy will be mandatory for all motorsport categories within the next few years. This allows motorsport to make a clear statement about sustainability. Most racing categories use fuels from a single supplier, only Formula 1 and MotoGP have multiple competing fuel suppliers. Engine and fuel development should be optimized together to achieve maximum performance and durability. The paper describes the rules for sustainable fuels and power units for F1 and WEC. The objectives and challenges for the development of a race powertrain are described. In addition, a Formula 1 single cylinder development engine and a hydrogen race engine demonstrator are presented.
