Summary

The new turbocharged 1.4l 4-cylinder engine with central direct injection stands out in the new family of small gasoline engines from General Motors. It is not only powerful and climate-friendly; the all-aluminum power unit also sets a new benchmark for refinement. The development of extremely low sound and vibration levels as well as best in class refinement were among the primary development targets. The excellent refinement is due to a number of measures, such as a silent inverted-tooth chain and the structural isolation of the highpressure fuel injectors. The engine offers power outputs up to 155 hp and is fun to drive, with a peak torque of 235 Nm. Compared with the current 1.4l turbo, the new direct injected all-aluminum engine significantly improves performance and response while reducing fuel consumption. Instead of creating a high output 1.0l 3-cylinder Turbo, GM has chosen to add a fourth cylinder for optimum balance of all requirements. The turbocharged 1.4l takes the step from pure downsizing to rightsizing in order to balance low and high load-efficiency. Development for this engine took place globally for production and sale in all global markets. This engine will be built in the innovative ’Flex Plant’ in Szentgotthárd, Hungary and several other plants around the world.
