Summary

Decarbonization of the global maritime industry is a crucial measure for reaching the goals set in the Paris climate agreement. Due to the very complex structure of the maritime business with merchant trade as well as passenger transport, both on deep sea and short sea routes and tramp routing, there will be multiple solutions and pathways for industrialization of decarbonization solutions. One pathway is that of alternative fuels. However, these fuels will have limited availability, both in terms of volume and local availability for years to come. As a consequence, decisions for shipowners regarding investments in propulsion systems for new ships, e.g., with dual-fuel operation and retrofitting of existing ships, are difficult.
