Summary
The Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) is an attractive option to eliminate CO2 emissions in global automotive markets and is seeing rapidly growing interest. For challenging applications, with high power requirements and/or long ranges the H2ICE offers advantages in vehicle range and refueling time. With adaptions to the air path, fuel path and control system the engine and vehicle architecture can largely be reused. This leads to an economically attractive solution to achieve zero CO2 transportation with very low emissions.
This paper presents the process for engine combustion optimization and vehicle adaptation to H2ICE. A diesel powered light commercial vehicle baseline is used. The vehicle is adapted with a hydrogen storage system and the engine is modified with BW’s new medium pressure fuel injection and control system for H2ICE. Various modifications are described which help to optimize the combustion performance for H2ICE. The aftertreatment system has been recalibrated for H2ICE.
Engine results and WLTP vehicle chassis dyno test results demonstrate the expected excellent emissions performance. Simulations, calibrated from these measurements are used to confirm the expected emissions behavior under real driving conditions. These results highlight the attractiveness of this technology as a fast and effective solution for zero CO2 emissions.
