Summary
In 2014 General Motors re-entered the Diesel passenger car market in North America, the first in 25 years, with the introduction of the Chevrolet Cruze. The introduction of 1.6 liter Midsize Diesel Engine into the new Chevrolet Cruze, Equinox, and the GMC Terrain continues General Motors commitment to Diesel passenger cars in North America. This leverages General Motors strategy to take successful European applications and launch them into the North American market. The paper describes how the engine has been developed to meet the high expectations of North American customers (noise refinement, performance and driveability), tougher emissions standards and more stringent On Board Diagnostics. The 1.6 Midsize Diesel Engine meets these North American requirements with high power density, very good noise performance and in-vehicle segment leader fuel economy. The key technical features of the base engine, controls, and emission reduction technology are described in the paper.
