Summary

With implementation of EU 5 by the European Emission Legislation the emission limits for heavy duty diesel engines have been reduced within the last 20 years by 89% for NOx and 97% for particulate matter. This trend will continue with implementation of US 2010 and EU 6 emission limits. Beside this, heavy duty diesel engines have to be economically with high robustness and low fuel consumption due to an excellent efficiency. This requires beside combustion optimization for a new engine development an overall optimization of the air, injection and exhaust aftertreatment system.
