Summary

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to increase requirements on batteries to meet customer demands regarding fast-charging, safety and durability. Battery charging time is one of the top concerns of consumers who consider buying an EV. Batteries need to deliver and handle much higher currents to allow dynamic vehicle driving and ultra-fast re-charging, as well as meet the highest battery safety standards. Very careful thermal management of battery systems will be required to control temperatures during ultra-fast charging and to prevent thermal runaway propagation.

Immersive thermal management with dielectric thermal fluids has shown to better remove heat and allow better temperature homogeneity of the battery pack when compared to the most advanced indirect thermal system with double-faced side cooling using water/glycol. Immersive thermal management with dielectric fluids is also beneficial in meeting and even exceeding demanding safety and abuse requirements.

Latest abuse tests performed with immersive modules using NMC-811 prismatic cells with high energy and capacity demonstrated no thermal propagation and no fire. Immersive thermal design can also help to reduce weight of the battery system and can allow system designers to optimize vehicle integration.
