Summary
Mobility refers to various means of transportation and services that contribute to the convenient movement of people and objects, and is continuously changing and accelerating due to technological, social, policy, and regulatory factors. Global automakers share the electric vehicle market through innovative manufacturing cost reduction and strategy of developing a platform, which apply to all segments of our product line. Hyundai Mobis is working to develop future mobility such as Purpose Built Vehicle (PBV), Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), and Robotics as a “Mobility Platform Provider” and realizing its vision and mission focusing on electrification, autonomous driving, and connectivity technologies. The direction of electric drive unit development is miniaturization, high efficiency, weight reduction, and low cost, as well as development of replacement technology for rare earth permanent magnet motors. To this end, hairpin winding technology, oil direct cooling technology, and x-in-1 integrated system were developed, and ferrite permanent magnet motors and wound rotor synchronous motors (WRSM) are being developed. In addition, the application of axial flux motor (AFM) is being considered because it is very important to increase torque density per unit weight. However, challenges remain, such as increased difficulty in core production, instability in the rotor/stator structure, and improvement in cooling technology. Lastly, we are developing an in-wheel motor system to respond to multi-purpose vehicles in the future. The in-wheel motor system is a technology that puts a motor inside the wheel of an electric vehicle and drives it independently and improving vehicle cornering stability, as well as an e-corner that enables zero-turn and crab driving. It is a core module technology and is attracting attention as a future mobility solution. In this article, we will introduce the development direction of Mobis' traction motor systems for the future mobility and share the technological advancements that Mobis has recently achieved regarding the in-wheel motor system.
