Summary
The displacement of diesel engines applied to medium-class SUVs has been from 2.0L to 2.3L because the engines need high-torque and high-power to drive the heavy-weight body. However, the fuel economy of SUV has to be significantly improved to avoid global warming and to save fossil fuel. Furthermore, its emission performance also should be improved to meet Euro 6. Consequently, the new In-line-4 1.6L diesel engine was developed to achieve “high-torque and high-power”, ”low exhaust emissions meeting Euro 6”, “light weight” and “good fuel economy” simultaneously. In order to meet these requirements, the technical items below were applied to the new engine. (a) Dual-stage twin turbo system equipped with two waste-gates and a variable geometry nozzle. (b) NOx storage catalyst (hereafter NSC). (c) Light weight engine block and head. (d) 9-speed automatic transmission (hereafter 9AT).
