Summary

The paper describes the positioning and technical concept of the new OM 656 six-cylinder series as the top-of-the-line within the new generation of diesel engines from Mercedes-Benz. The description covers the design of the basic engine and engine peripherals. A further emphasis is a system description on the design and functionality of the thermodynamics, exhaust gas recirculation and charge cycle with two-stage turbocharging and exhaust aftertreatment, which represent the focus of the integrated technology approach for the realization of very low emissions along with best-possible fuel economy. To conclude, there is a presentation of the results achieved on the engine and the complete powertrain against the backdrop of future emission standards as well as of the overall powertrain configuration with a view to maximum customer benefit. The OM 656 six-cylinder in-line engine in the form of the new 400 d clearly extends the top end of the performance and comfort levels offered by diesel engines while forming the new top-of-the-line diesel engine from Mercedes Benz.
