Summary

Starting in the fall of 2017, Mercedes-Benz will launch its new generation of four-cylinder gasoline engines with model designation M 264, beginning with the E-Class Coupé. Thanks to its high specific output of 110 kW/l, the 2.0-liter Toptype will advance into output regions that were previously reserved for six-cylinder engines. In comparison with such engines, systematic downsizing in combination with reduced engine friction, the use of CAMTRONIC and, in particular, the introduction of a 48 V system with a Belt-driven Starter-Generator (BSG) results in an around 23% fuel saving. With this emotively appealing engine, special importance was attached to a superior driving experience with immediate response, high pulling power and good flexibility. Further optimization of the proven BlueDIRECT combustion process in combination with a gasoline particulate filter leads to low exhaust emissions. The low levels of noise and vibration demanded by the premium segment are achieved by comfortable starting by means of starter-generator as well as comprehensive NVH measures.
