Summary

For passenger cars, the EU6 NOx limit is already proposed to be drastically reduced to 0,08 g/km. For commercial engines similar substantial reductions are expected. How to achieve a corresponding NOx level of less than 0,4 g/kWh with engine internal measures, and under which thermodynamic boundary conditions, is the subject of this paper. The effects on soot and hydrocarbon emissions, on fuel consumption, heat rejection and peak firing pressure are discussed. To achieve the required low NOx emissions with good fuel economy, the combustion must not be retarded. For this, a well performing charging system is a prerequisite. For the commercial engine, the biggest challenge is to achieve the extremely low NOx emissions realized steady state, also under transient conditions.
