Summary

Improved charge / discharge performance underpins the safety and durability of electrified vehicles. Enhancing the latter two factors provides the foundation to build customer acceptance of vehicles - the work reported here attempts to demonstrate a thermal management technology which contributes to this foundation.

The design and performance of a directly cooled module of a battery pack suitable for both on- and off-road electric vehicle applications is described, resulting from a partnership of industry-leading companies in power systems solutions and thermal management fluids.

The directly cooled module evolved with minimal modification from an existing indirectly cooled design, and has identical electrical architecture, containing 336 cells with 21700 cylindrical form-factor, allowing a clear comparison of the different approaches to thermal management. A prototype version of the directly cooled module was built and tested over a representative severe duty cycle against the indirectly cooled module. CFD simulations were performed to improve the flow distribution within the matrix of cells and understand the system sensitivities and a production-oriented design for the directly cooled module was also developed that is suitable for high-volume manufacture.
