Summary
As the automotive industry accelerates its transition towards electric propulsion, the challenge is to find system solutions that balance cost, risk and timing. BorgWarner’s new flexible integrated drive module (iDM) platform addresses those challenges by offering the potential to tailor the cost-performance tradeoffs while enabling sharing of development and manufacturing investment among different applications. This is achieved by adopting a platform approach, in which flexibility is built into the design of the major subcomponents of the iDM (traction inverter, motor, gearbox, cooling and lubrication) in order to facilitate adjusting the overall system properties. This approach increases the initial effort to develop the unit as additional considerations need to be taken in order to ensure that sufficient flexibility is built into the design to allow covering a wide range of applications and variants without sacrificing performance or cost. However, once this is done, the effort to adjust the platform design to new requirements and applications is significantly reduced. BorgWarner has developed its iDM220 product platform with this in mind from the beginning, enabling the use of different motor types, cooling solutions, semiconductor devices (Si vs SiC) and adapt to different battery voltages. Additionally, further flexibility has been built into the design to allow adding or removing auxiliary functions such as park-lock and disconnect as well as performance enhancing functions such as torque vectoring or LSD. In this paper we will present the technical innovations that make the iDM220 the system solution of choice for future EVs.
