Summary

To achieve further CO2 reductions for special applications in the passenger car segment, particularly in the world of motorsports and in high-performance sports cars, hydrogen internal-combustion engines represent an attractive alternative to battery-electric powertrains. To explore the potential offered by a high-performance gasoline engine adapted for hydrogen operation, Bosch Engineering and Ligier Automotive have created a motorsports vehicle equipped with a hydrogen engine. In doing so, the partners set out to make as few changes as possible to the existing engine hardware. The aim was for hydrogen-specific optimizations to be achieved primarily using software and by making adjustments to individual components only when required. The crank shaft, valve train, cylinder head, pistons and turbocharger assembly were unchanged from the mass-production unit, in this case a 3.0-l biturbo engine. Modifications were made to the injectors for the direct and port fuel injection as well as the ignition system, while a water injection system was also integrated. Through systematic calibration, a high power output of 443 kW and torque of 650 Nm were achieved along with excellent response characteristics of the engine in transient operation. The prototype vehicle, the Ligier JS2 RH2, features a new carbon monocoque. A safety concept with passive ventilation and active warning systems ensures optimum protection in the event of hydrogen leaks. The knowledge gained during the project will serve as the basis for future customer projects, which focus on the conversion of existing gasoline engines into high-performance hydrogen engines.
