Summary

At the end of 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for the first time imposed requirements to ensure a minimum service life for electric cars and their batteries. Accordingly, battery packs must have a residual energy of at least 70% (75%) from model year 2026 (2031) onwards, once they reach a service life of eight years or about 160,000 km. Similar requirements are being discussed as part of the UN GTR II. This increases the pressure on OEMs to monitor the lifetime of their battery fleets and, if necessary, take preventive action to minimize warranty claims.
