Summary
The global desire to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions has led the transportation industry to consider many potential de-carbonization technologies, ranging from Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), through Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) and more recently the potential for the incumbent Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) to run on hydrogen. On a Well-To-Wheels (WTW) basis Renewable Natural Gas-fueled ICEs also remain an attractive option.
Westport’s HPDITM fuel system was initially developed to allow late cycle injection of natural gas, and Westport has since demonstrated that the same HPDITM system can be adapted to hydrogen and achieve CO2 reductions of up to 97% [Vienna 2021, 2022, 2023], with efficiencies exceeding the base diesel engine and power/torque equivalent to, or higher than, the base diesel engine. The HPDI system allows a common platform for diesel, methane and hydrogen engines, such that all three engine versions remain essentially the same, apart from the injectors.
