Summary

In the premium vehicle class, 8-cylinder engines represent a superior and globally relevant motorization. BMW has developed a characterful new 8-cylinder gasoline engine to consolidate this segment. Besides fulfilling all current efficiency and emissions requirements, the emotional impact of this drive train was in particular focus.
This paper describes the engine concept and structural design along with the functional properties of the new BMW 8-cylinder gasoline engine. The significantly increased dynamics and accompanying low fuel consumption under realistic customer driving conditions, combined with its typical engine sound produces overall an impressive and authentic package for the brand new sports vehicle. As a result, the new BMW 8-cylinder gasoline engine is an outstanding representative of the BMW Efficient Dynamics Program.
