Summary
The worldwide demand for lower emissions and conservation of resources is dominating powertrain development activity. Improved vehicle performance in conjunction with CO2 emissions reductions are bridging the gap between already clean gasoline engine-powered vehicles and Diesel engines. Due to the inherent flexibility of injection timing, the introduction of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDi) enables further improvements in fuel efficiency and conventional emissions. This paper presents Delphi’s approach and solutions for next generation GDi systems, addressing the market demands including low particulate emissions. Steady improvement in engine efficiency and emissions reduction obtained using higher fuel pressure has been a general trend in engine development since the introduction of gasoline direct injection. Delphi has anticipated these trends and has driven gasoline fuel injection component and software development to assist vehicle OEMs with addressing these challenges. Depending on the engine performance and emissions target, validated GDi injectors and pumps are available for fuel pressures up to 400 bar.
