Summary
With the Bugatti brand, a significant traditional name among the automobile manufacturers awakens to new life. The traditional maxims of the company philosophy such as workmanship and technological perfection into the smallest detail as well as aesthetic design are carried on in the new high power Bugatti Veyron 16.4 sports car concept, even if in a new, modern interpretation. From the technical point of view, the highlight of the vehicle is undoubtedly once again set by the drive system. An adequate, innovative drive concept is used as a completely newly developed 8.0 liter, 16-cylinder mid-mounted engine with a performance of 736 kW/1001 PS, following the style of the 16-cylinder idea realized for the first time over 70 years ago. The article at hand first describes the selected engine concept in detail, contemplated under the presented general conceptual framework. Through the selection of the W-design as an extraordinarily compact manufacturing basisconstruction, a supercharged aggregate with four turbochargers and an effective chargeair cooling could be realized in spite of the strict installation specifications predetermined by the vehicle. In the following descriptions, the finer points of the W16 motor’s detailed solutions will be more closely dealt with using selected examples. Along with the shortblock assembly and the complex, highly loaded crank mechanism, characteristics of the oil circulation system with its innovative modular shaft oil pump will be more closely inspected. In order to fulfill the lofty goals regarding sovereign, instantaneous power development, the turbocharger concept was given special attention. Its specific layout systematic and thermodynamic design will be comprehensively portrayed. The engine parameters, reached in sum through the explained measures, help the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 to outstanding road performance that is superior to the competition.
