Summary

The introduction of synthetic fuels is regarded as essential to achieve a comprehensive CO2 reduction within the transportation sector. In this study, a commercially available reference fuel and two blends containing advanced, synthetic components were investigated. A single cylinder gasoline engine with a floating liner (AVL-FRISC) was used with a new program design for close-to-reality friction assessment. It is based on a systems engineering approach and includes a specific test cycle for lubricant degradation.

Used oil samples were collected during the FRISC experiment, which were subsequently analyzed via conventional and advanced analytical methods. This consisted of the determination of various additives and degradation products with the applicable standardized methods as well as with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) on the molecular level.

The effect of fuel accumulation on physical properties (viscosity and density) was also determined via gas chromatography flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Subsequently, wear protection performance was investigated with an SRV® (Schwing-Reib-Verschleiß) tribometer, focusing on wear volume utilizing close-to-reality materials. Additionally, the composition of the derived tribofilms was determined via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The presented study aims to determine comprehensively the physicochemical effects of advanced fuel blends, considering friction, oil degradation and the resulting surface chemistry and wear.
