Summary
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) has gained significant popularity and acceptance from the consumer market. As the market share of BEV increase and transition into “early majority” in technology adoption curve, profitability of BEV becomes the focus. One of the solutions for profitable BEV is the modular architecture approach to increase the common parts across many variants of vehicle. In support of such future vision, a compact electric drive become an enabler of reusable “common part” between vehicle segments.
Compact electric drive module would lead to a smaller electric machine (eMachine) which poses new challenge for maintaining the vehicle performance and efficiency of the system. To address these conflicting goals, BorgWarner has developed well-balanced system solution enabling compact highly efficient integrated-drive-module (iDM). Furthermore, the concept is developed focusing on downward scalability from D to B segment vehicle requirements. BorgWarner next generation iDM provides packaging size suited for B-segment vehicle with performance of D-segment vehicle. This paper presents few key enablers for this unique system solution, such as scalable 800V SiC inverter architecture, torque dense IPM, compact high-speed differential dual gearbox power flow, and advanced thermal management system. In addition to these design details associated with each of the sub-systems, BorgWarner will provide an insight to system design approach and system-based simulation and results that show the audience a sense of how our product designs are driven through innovative solutions towards a sustainable mobility.
