Summary

The achievable range of a battery electric vehicle (BEV) is one of the key characteristics for the adoption of this technology and hence minimizing its energy consumption is essential. Taking the driving resistances aside, the electric drive (e-drive) accounts for most of the losses in an BEV and consequently it is essential to optimize its efficiency. This paper addresses different technology trends to reach an efficiency increase by improving the inverter hardware, the inverter software and the e-motor. Afterwards it is shown how to combine these efficiency improvements in a highly optimized drivetrain in terms of energy consumption.
