Summary

Mercedes-Benz has a history of more than ten years in developing hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) since the launch of the S 400 Hybrid back in 2009. Extensive experience led to the evolution of the present generation of externally chargeable hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). Following the successful launch of the current hybrid powertrain generation in the Mercedes-Benz S-, E-, C- and GLC-class, the consistent expansion to a wide model range represents the logical next step. For one thing, the 3rd generation of Mercedes-Benz hybrid powertrains amplifies the SUV segment. An exceptional all-electric range of up to 100 km and an advanced electric performance is achieved by a parallel connection and a cell capacity improvement of the existing HV battery. Thanks to Torque on Demand, the regeneration potential is significantly increased leading to a higher overall efficiency.
Beyond that, the EQ Power family is extended to the compact segment, which is characterized by a transverse powertrain installation. The newly developed 8-speed dual clutch transmission is connected to a compact hybrid traction unit. A combination of the HV battery cell update and the low vehicle weight results in an all-electric range of more than 60 km.
Despite challenges regarding the technical design and packaging, the new EQ Power PHEVs offer increased electrical performances and remarkable all-electric ranges. An advanced intelligent drive management assists the driver, whereas the realized one pedal feeling offers the opportunity for individualization.
This presentation introduces both the compact class and the GLE-class to the Mercedes-Benz EQ Power family and provides insight into the model-specific challenges and characteristics.
