Summary

Chiefly stricter environmental requirements and product competitiveness have led GM to develop a brand-new family of Diesel engines encompassing 3-, 4- and 6-cylinder variants. The selection of 0.5ℓ unitary displacement, optimized B/S and the number of cylinders for the different variants was done by means of extensive analyses with the goal to minimize CO2 while satisfying the specific performance and NVH targets of the various vehicle applications.
Following the 3.0ℓ 6-cylinder presentation at 40th Internationales Wiener Motorensymposium in 2019, it is now time for the smaller 1.5ℓ 3-cylinder member of the new family. Weight reduction, efficiency, cost and optimal NVH behavior were the key requirements for the development and led for example to the adoption of an aluminum block with integrated counter balance-shaft.
This paper describes how the key technologies have been identified and developed, such as the combustion and EGR systems, the active thermal management, the engine control unit and the emission reduction system. Eventually, the vehicle integration is described, with first application on the new Opel Astra achieving best-in-class 90 gCO2/km NEDC.
