Summary
After TFSI technology was first introduced in 2004, and the second generation was presented in 2007, Audi had already launched the third generation of TFSI engines on the market in 2011. The current advanced development of the 2.0l TFSI engine represents another milestone in TFSI technology by Audi. For the first time, the new 2.0l engine implements a combustion process for turbocharged gasoline engines that features a lengthened expansion stroke. Despite its increase in engine displacement, this approach has been successful in significantly reducing fuel consumption of the EA888 engine in the power class up to 147 kW compared to the previously used 1.8l TFSI engine. Therefore the new 2.0l TFSI is the pioneer of direct-injection gasoline engines making the move from downsizing to rightsizing. The key step taken to boost efficiency in this approach was the application of the Audi Valvelift System on the intake system. It allows a short intake valve opening time which significantly shortens the induction stroke. In conjunction with a compression ratio that has been increased from ε=9.6 to ε=11.7 and extensive optimizations concerning the combustion chamber and the intake ports, a combustion process was realized, which attains a level of efficiency never before achieved in a homogeneous charge gasoline engine for passenger cars.
Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
Members of the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers have access to all lectures of the International Vienna Motor Symposia.
