Summary

The work reported in this paper focuses on system simulation applied to a heavy-duty truck spark ignition natural gas (NG) engine operating with lean fuel mixtures. This natural gas technology allows for a clear benefit in terms of fuel consumption and a drastic decrease of the engine-out emissions. These advantages are depicted through the application of system simulation. The in-cylinder process predicted using physical models - allowing a limited experimental data dependency and extrapolation capabilities - is correlated with measurement data. The pollutants kinetic mechanisms are modeled in order to predict the main pollutants emissions such as NOx and CO. A comparison between simulation and test bench results is achieved on a complete engine map. Finally, the combustion model is integrated into a complete multi-cylinder engine model including a turbocharged air path system with objective to adapt the original boosting system design for lean operation.
