Summary

This paper presents a comparative analysis of four rear axle drivetrain technologies commonly used in Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): Open Differential, Limited Slip Differential, Twin Clutch Torque Vectoring, and Twin Motor drivetrains. The study focuses on three performance criteria: traction, stability, and agility. Simulation studies are utilized to support the evaluation.

The analysis reveals that Limited Slip Differentials (LSDs) offer the best value for money in terms of overall performance for BEVs. LSDs significantly improve traction and stability over the conventional Open Differential, effectively distributing torque between the rear wheels to optimize power delivery and minimize wheel slip in challenging driving conditions. This enhances overall vehicle safety and driving confidence.
