Summary

As part of its "Way to Zero" strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, Volkswagen is expanding its powertrain portfolio with a newly developed series-parallel full hybrid drive. This will be used in the Volkswagen T-Roc and Golf as well as other Group models in the course of 2026 and is aimed at markets with high demand for efficient drives with a long range. At the heart of the drive system is a compact hybrid module that combines a generator (EM1), a driving electric motor (EM2), an electronically controlled clutch for direct propulsion of the combustion engine and highly integrated power electronics. In combination with the further optimised 1.5-litre TSI evo2 engine with variable turbine geometry (VTG)-turbocharger and Miller combustion process, which achieves a peak efficiency of 39.2%, the result is a particularly efficient powertrain with system outputs of 100 kW and 125 kW respectively. In the energy system, a high-voltage battery with hybrid-specific NMC cell chemistry is used, which, together with a booster, offers BEV-like driving dynamics. On this basis, the newly developed TwinDrive operating strategy controls the drive in three modes: electric driving at low speeds, serial operation to optimise consumption in urban environments, and parallel operation for highly efficient driving on country roads and motorways. The most efficient operating mode is always selected based on the desired wheel torque, thus ensuring a dynamic and fuel-efficient driving experience.
