Summary

Exhaust emission type approval testing of passenger cars and light duty trucks in Europe was based on the “New European Driving Cycle” (NEDC). It has become evident that the NEDC is no longer adequate to represent real world emissions and fuel consumption. In November 2007 a working group at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe was established to create a Worldwide harmonised Light-duty vehicles Test Procedures (WLTP). Objective of this working group has been to develop a harmonized measurement of exhaust emissions and energy consumption for passenger cars and light vehicles with different drive trains. The work is focused on a harmonized, representative driving cycle and on a harmonized test procedure. COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) 2017/1151 of 1 June 2017 implements WLTP into European emission legislation.
