Summary

Since 2001 BMW Group Research and Technology investigates and further develops the mixture formation and combustion process with hydrogen high-pressure direct injection in single-cylinder research engines in cooperation with the Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Thermodynamics at Graz University of Technology. With advanced injectors it is possible today to stratify the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber respectively to control the overall combustion process by means of multiple injections per cycle in spite of low density and a high diffusion coefficient inherent to gaseous fuels and especially to hydrogen. Latest results from engine tests in a natural aspirating or charging mode as well as from measurements performed on an engine with visual access and from the mixture formation and combustion simulation are shown.
